Social & Emotional Learning

We believe creating a safe and supportive learning environment, promoting positive wellbeing and developing healthy, responsible relationships contributes to each student’s physical, social, mental and emotional development.

Our wellbeing focus is structured around the implementation of a whole school Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) strategy which includes the following frameworks and programs:

  • Bounce Back
  • Circle Time
  • Community Action Projects (Sustainability Partnerships, Volunteering)
  • Drug Education
  • Interpersonal Development (Sexuality Education)
  • Personal Learning
  • Student Leadership (Junior Advisory Group)
  • Transition

SEL involves and promotes 5 core competencies:

  • Self-awareness
  • Social-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Relationship skills
  • Responsible decision-making

SEL is explicitly taught during timetabled sessions however where possible key principles are integrated into everyday instructional approaches and classroom practices. This involves teachers providing opportunities to encourage students to explore emotions, work collaboratively, develop respect for others and learn to manage their own behaviour.

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have significant impairments in the social domain which may include play skills, understanding emotions, and social communication ability. To develop appropriate social skills and behavior they often need the support of specific interventions such as the use of role plays and Social Stories
